ASUS spent years selling routers on a built-in WTFast button, then quietly switched it off in December 2025. TP-Link went the other direction. It signed a WTFast partnership on January 24, 2024, built the technology into its first serious gaming router, and has kept adding models since. If you own or are shopping for a TP-Link Archer gaming router, the router-level WTFast that older guides describe (including the earlier version of this page) is real, it still works, and on the current lineup it works better than it used to.
The catch is that most of what those older guides told you about which TP-Link routers run WTFast, and how you turn it on, was wrong. This page used to list the Archer AX6000, AX11000, and AX55 as WTFast routers. They are not, and never were, part of the partnership. Here is the accurate version.
The Archer models that actually run WTFast
WTFast on TP-Link routers lives in the Archer “GE” gaming line plus one Wi-Fi 6E model. It is not baked into the mainstream Archer AX home routers, no matter what a spec-scraped list claims. On its official WTFast setup FAQ, TP-Link names the current supported hardware, and every one of them is a purpose-built gaming router with a game panel in the firmware.

The GE800 is TP-Link’s halo product. It runs what the company markets as “Quad Acceleration for Games,” which stacks four separate tricks: game application acceleration, game device prioritization, mobile game acceleration, and game server acceleration through WTFast’s Gamers Private Network. WTFast handles that last leg, the long-haul route between your connection and a distant game server, which is the part local QoS cannot touch. TP-Link’s Archer GE800 product page spells out the split, and independent reviews like Tom’s Guide confirm the gaming panel is a real feature, not a sticker.
If your router is not on that list, it does not have router-level WTFast. That is not a firmware bug you can flash your way out of, and there is no hidden “Gaming Accelerator” tab waiting under Advanced settings. The older AX-series Archers are good routers; they simply were never part of this deal.
How the setup actually works
The real process is short, and it does not involve enabling SSH, changing your DNS to a hardcoded pair, or copying executable names out of Task Manager. Per TP-Link’s own walkthrough, it is four steps:
- Connect a device to the router by Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then open the web interface at
http://tplinkwifi.net(or the router’s LAN IP) and sign in. - Go to Game Center → Game Acceleration, then open the WTFast tab.
- Click Log In, or create a WTFast account if you do not have one.
- Start the trial, pick your game, and connect before you launch it.
One detail matters for anyone weighing the cost. The trial you get through the router path is generous: TP-Link’s documentation describes a free trial that runs “without any restrictions for the first month.” That is a full 30 days. Compare that with the PC route, where WTFast’s current standalone trial is three days and asks for a credit card up front. Same GPN underneath, longer runway when you start from the router.
After the trial, WTFast’s standard subscription runs around $13 per month, with a cheaper quarterly rate if you commit. The router does not get you a permanent free tier; it gets you a longer look before you decide.

Why console players still want the router path
Here is the real reason TP-Link’s approach is worth understanding right now, and where it separates from ASUS. When ASUS retired its router-side WTFast in December 2025, it pushed everyone to a Windows-only PC client. That means no macOS, no Linux, and critically, no direct console acceleration. If you play on a PS5, an Xbox Series X, or a Switch, the ASUS path no longer optimizes the console itself. TP-Link kept the thing ASUS dropped. Because the GE-series router does the optimizing at the network level, the WTFast route applies to whatever is behind it. TP-Link lists Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android as covered platforms. Your console never installs anything. It plugs into the router, the router routes its game traffic through the GPN, and the console has no idea the optimization is happening.
That is a meaningful edge if your lag problem is on a platform that cannot run gaming software. It is also handy in a house with more than one player, since the optimization sits in front of every device instead of being tied to one PC’s install. WTFast CEO Rob Bartlett framed the whole partnership around exactly that idea when it launched: “helping gamers to kill lag across all gaming devices in the household.”
What WTFast fixes, and what it doesn’t
In 20-plus years running IT operations, the most common mistake I watched people make with any accelerator was expecting it to fix the wrong problem. A router-level GPN reroutes the path your packets take to a distant server. That is the one job. It helps most when your lag comes from bad peering, a congested exchange between your ISP and the game’s data center, or packet loss somewhere in the middle of the route. On those connections, sending traffic through the GPN’s server network can genuinely shorten or clean up the path.
It does nothing for the problems that live inside your own house. If your ping spikes because you game over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi three rooms from the router, WTFast will not save you; a wired connection or the 5GHz/6GHz band will. TP-Link’s general gaming guidance says the same thing, and it says it before it mentions WTFast at all: use a wired connection or the higher bands, keep firmware current, and stop background downloads during play. If your frames drop because your GPU is maxed out, that is a settings problem, not a network one. And if you are already 20ms from a nearby server on a clean route, there is very little for a GPN to improve. Rerouting a good path can even add a hop or two.
So the honest test is the same on a TP-Link router as anywhere else: check your in-game ping to the servers you actually play on, turn WTFast on, and look again. If the number drops on a route that was hurting you, keep it. If it does not move, the problem was never routing, and no router feature was going to fix it. This is also why pairing the router with the basics still matters more than any single toggle: a clean DNS setup and sane QoS priorities do more for most players than any accelerator, and they cost nothing.

So which one should you actually buy?
If you are already sold on the router path, match the model to your situation instead of buying the flagship by default. The Archer GXE75 is the cheapest entry, a Wi-Fi 6E router that carries the same WTFast integration for well under half the price of the top model; it is the sensible pick if you just want console-friendly acceleration without a Wi-Fi 7 upgrade. The GE550 is the middle ground, a proper Wi-Fi 7 router with multi-gig ports and the RGB gaming design, and it is enough router for almost anyone. The GE800 only makes sense if you actually have 10-gig internet or a house full of Wi-Fi 7 devices to feed; the WTFast piece is identical to what the cheaper models run, so you are paying for the radios and ports, not for better acceleration.
And if you already own a capable router, remember you do not need any of this hardware to try WTFast. The GPN is a PC install first; the TP-Link integration just brings it to consoles and to the rest of the network. Test it on the machine you have, decide whether routing is your real problem, and only then let the router question enter into it.
