On July 21, 2026, Memory Boost stops being an opt-in experiment and becomes part of The Sims 4 for everyone. PC, Mac, and console. Enabled by default, with no way to switch it off after the patch lands. EA confirmed the date in the July 14 Laundry List, and for a game that has shipped with the same memory ceiling since 2014, this is the most consequential performance change the base game has seen in years.
Here is the honest version, because that matters more than the marketing line: Memory Boost is real, it helps, and it will not fix every kind of Sims 4 lag. The developers said so themselves. If your game stutters because your save is enormous or your lots are overdecorated, you are about to feel a genuine difference. If it lags because the simulation engine is choking on a hundred autonomous Sims and a stack of outdated mods, Memory Boost barely touches that. Knowing which problem you actually have is the whole game.
What Memory Boost actually changes under the hood
For most of its life, The Sims 4 ran as a memory-constrained process that would slowly bloat as a session went on. Long play sessions, big households, and heavily built lots pushed the game against limits it was never great at managing, and the result was the familiar decay: smooth for the first hour, then progressively laggier until a save-and-restart cleared it.
Memory Boost changes how the game allocates and manages RAM during play. The most concrete thing EA engineer Dmitrii described is reduced memory-related crashing and save corruption, plus shorter load times “in some cases.” Producer Morgan was more specific about the mechanism: the feature addresses protobuffer overflow in overstuffed saves, which is why heavily populated files that used to fail can now load, though sometimes more slowly depending on your hardware.
If you followed this feature during early access, you knew it as a separate executable. Memory Boost first appeared as TS4_x64_fpb.exe, quietly dropped into the game’s bin folder for Windows players back in August 2025 before its official opt-in launch that September. Two things change on July 21. You no longer launch a special executable, and the feature no longer requires DirectX 11. It now runs on DirectX 9 and DirectX 11 alike, which is what makes a default-on rollout to older machines and consoles possible.
I have spent twenty years in IT operations, and this pattern is familiar from server work: an application that leaks or fragments memory over a long-running process does not need a faster CPU, it needs better allocation discipline. That is exactly the class of problem Memory Boost targets. It is a memory-management fix, not a graphics upgrade, and setting your expectations around that distinction is the difference between being satisfied and being annoyed on July 21.
The performance numbers from early access
The opt-in period gave us real data instead of promises. Player testing during the early access build measured a reduction of roughly 5 seconds in the Load Game menu and about 11 seconds in Resume Game, which are the two loading paths that Sims players hit most often in a session.
The in-game frame rate results were more interesting than the load times. Build mode, historically one of the worst offenders for stutter on a decorated lot, held a consistent 60fps in testing. Cluttered residential builds averaged around 40fps, and busy business lots, the genuine worst case, sat near 20fps. Testers also reported no clock-freezing during extended sleep cycles, which is one of the clearest symptoms of the old memory decay.
None of those numbers make The Sims 4 a high-frame-rate showcase. A 20fps business lot is still a rough experience. But the shape of the improvement is what counts: the game stops degrading the longer you play, and the floor comes up on exactly the scenarios that used to force a restart. EA’s own guidance points to the same profile, saying the biggest gains show up during longer sessions, in large households, on highly decorated lots, and in older save files.
Who gets the biggest gain, and who barely notices
If you play short sessions with a small household on a lightly built lot, you may notice almost nothing on July 21, and that is fine. You were never hitting the ceiling that Memory Boost raises. Your Sims 4 lag, if you have any, is coming from somewhere else entirely, and I will get to that.
The players who should feel this the most are the legacy-save veterans. If you have a save that has run for hundreds of Sim-days, a full-household generational file, or a build packed with thousands of placed objects and custom content, you are the exact profile this feature was built for. Rental lots, apartments crowded with NPCs, and multi-lot businesses are where the old engine fell apart, and where the new allocation model has the most headroom to reclaim.
Console and Mac players deserve a specific mention. Memory Boost was a Windows-only opt-in for its entire early access life. The July 21 patch is the first time it reaches Mac and console at all, so those players are jumping straight from the old behavior to the default-on version with no gradual transition. If you play on PS5, Xbox, or a Mac, this is your first taste of it, and it should be the most noticeable single performance patch The Sims 4 has pushed to your platform.
Most Sims 4 lag is local, not network-based, so this is one of the rare fixes you cannot buy your way out of with better internet. That said, if the stutter you are chasing shows up in your online games too, that is a different problem with a different fix.

The lag Memory Boost won’t touch
This is the part the announcement posts skip, and it is the most useful thing to understand before you install the patch and expect miracles.
The Sims 4 has two completely different kinds of slowdown, and they get lumped together as “lag” even though they have nothing in common. The first is frame lag: the camera itself stutters, your frame rate drops, and the picture gets choppy. That is a rendering and memory problem, and it is what Memory Boost helps with. The second is simulation lag, and it looks like this: the camera pans perfectly smoothly, but your Sims freeze mid-action, queued interactions never start, the in-game clock stalls and then jumps forward several minutes at once, and the pie menu takes a beat too long to open. When that happens, the graphics are fine. It is the game’s logic engine that has fallen behind.
Memory Boost does very little for simulation lag, because simulation lag is not a memory-allocation problem. It is the game’s simulation loop trying to process too many autonomous Sims, too many active mods, and too many queued events per tick. When EA was asked directly whether Memory Boost would fix the notorious lag at 3x game speed, Morgan said they had been investigating the issue but did not expect Memory Boost to fully solve it. That was a straight answer, and it tells you where the wall is.
So if you patch on July 21 and your clock still stutters at 3x speed while your camera stays smooth, that is not a broken update. That is a different category of problem, and it has its own set of fixes.
Fixing simulation lag yourself
The good news is that the community solved simulation lag years ago, and those tools still matter more than ever now that Memory Boost has cleared the memory problem out of the way.
The single most-used tool is the Simulation Lag Fix mod, currently in its Definitive Edition with well over 420,000 downloads on CurseForge. It works by adjusting how the game handles its simulation timing so the logic engine stops falling behind the clock. Pair it with TurboDriver’s Simulation Unclogger, which does something genuinely different: it clears out stuck and abandoned interactions that pile up in the simulation queue over a long save. The two are designed to run together, and the combination is the closest thing to a proper fix for 3x-speed stutter.
Then there is the housekeeping that most people skip. If you run mods or custom content, your cache files hold references to content you have since removed, and those dead references cause errors and stutter. Deleting localthumbcache.package from your Sims 4 folder in Documents is the fastest cache reset and forces the game to rebuild clean thumbnails. Do this every time you add or remove a batch of CC.
Watch OneDrive too. The Sims 4 constantly writes saves, cache, and thumbnails to your Documents folder, and if OneDrive is syncing that folder it can lock files mid-write and cause both stutter and save problems. Move your Sims 4 folder out of the synced path, or exclude it from OneDrive entirely. And keep your mods current: after any base-game patch, and July 21 is a big one, script mods frequently break until their creators update them, and a broken script mod is one of the most reliable causes of both crashing and lag.
None of that is exotic. It is the same discipline as keeping background processes from eating your frame rate or managing CPU load while you game. The Sims 4 simulation loop is CPU-bound, so anything stealing processor time from it makes simulation lag worse.
The two-minute checklist for July 21
You do not have to do anything to get Memory Boost. It is on by default the moment you patch. But if you want the smoothest possible result, spend two minutes before you load your main save:
- Update every script mod and piece of CC you use, or temporarily move your Mods folder out while you test the vanilla patch first.
- Delete
localthumbcache.packageso the game rebuilds its cache against the new version. - Confirm your Sims 4 Documents folder is not being synced by OneDrive.
- If you chase competitive frame rates in your other games, apply the same Windows 11 gaming settings that reduce input latency and background interference.
- Install the Simulation Lag Fix and Simulation Unclogger mods if 3x-speed stutter is your specific complaint, because Memory Boost will not solve that one for you.
