Blood of Dawnwalker’s Stutter Has a One-Setting Fix, and It Isn’t in the Graphics Menu

Rebel Wolves shipped five hotfixes in eight days after The Blood of Dawnwalker launched on September 3, and the most useful thing the studio published was not in any of them. It was a line in the Hotfix 1.0.2 known-issues list: “Game stuttering when in Windowed / Borderless mode (workaround: please try launching the game in Full Screen).”

That is the whole fix for a large share of the stutter reports. Not a setting inside the graphics tab. The display mode.

Change the display mode before you touch anything else

Borderless windowed hands your frames to the Windows desktop compositor, which gets a vote on when they actually reach the screen. Exclusive full screen takes that vote away. On most games the difference is small enough that nobody notices, and borderless wins on convenience because alt-tabbing is instant. On Dawnwalker the gap is large enough that Rebel Wolves put it at the top of its own workaround list rather than waiting to patch it.

Open Settings, go to Display, set Display Mode to Full Screen rather than Borderless or Windowed, and restart the game. If you run two monitors and use borderless specifically so you can keep something on the second screen, this will cost you that convenience. Try it anyway long enough to see whether your frame times settle, because it costs nothing to test and it is the single change with the highest hit rate right now.

One side effect worth knowing: the game’s launch known-issues page notes that gamepad users hitting the cursor-hijack bug are told to do the opposite and play windowed. If you are on a controller you may be choosing between two annoyances.

The shader-compile crash is a motherboard problem

The second big launch complaint is a crash during shader compilation, and Rebel Wolves does not treat it as a game bug. Its guidance is blunt: “Game crashing on compiling shaders (fix: please check if your BIOS is up to date)”, with a pointer to RAD Game Tools’ page on Oodle and Intel processors.

Translated: shader compilation is one of the heaviest sustained all-core loads a game will ever put on your CPU, so it surfaces instability that normal gameplay never reaches. If you are on an Intel 13th or 14th generation part, a BIOS update from your board maker is the actual remedy, not a launch option. Check your board model on the manufacturer’s support page and flash the current release before you spend an evening on config edits.

This is also why the crash looks random. It fires during a compile pass that only runs on first launch and after driver or patch changes, so players who get through it once assume it is fixed until the next update rebuilds the cache.

Worth being straight about that box, since Dawnwalker is single player: nothing above is a network problem, and no traffic router will change a compositor frame-pacing issue. The CTA is there because plenty of people land on a stutter guide while the thing actually ruining their evening is a ping spike in something else. If your problem is local rendering, skip it.

What hotfix 1.0.5 did not fix

Hotfix 1.0.5 arrived on September 11 at 2.1 GB with “improvements to the shader compilation pipeline”. DSOGaming retested afterwards on an RTX 5080 and an RTX 5090 and reported the camera-rotation stutter still present.

That distinction matters for how you spend your time. The hitch that fires when you swing the camera is not traversal stutter and not shader compilation, so the usual advice of “let the shaders finish and it will smooth out” does not apply to it. It is unresolved, the studio knows, and the honest answer today is full screen plus an upscaler rather than a settings combination that makes it disappear.

Two other things are working as designed rather than broken. Cutscenes are locked to 30 FPS while the decision sequences inside them run unlocked, which produces a cadence flip that reads as a stutter but is not one. And at native 4K with Lumen on Ultra, this game is simply expensive; DLSS or FSR at Quality is the intended way to play it, not a crutch.

Reflective surfaces shimmering on NVIDIA cards is a separate open issue, and the game’s known-issues page currently suggests driver 610.88 for it.

Run the display-mode change first, update the BIOS if you are on Intel, and hold your patch expectations loosely until Rebel Wolves ships something that names the camera hitch directly.
