Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Stuttering: Why the Anvil Engine Does This and What to Change First

Black Flag Resynced runs on the newest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, the same one that shipped inside Assassin’s Creed Shadows in 2025. If you played Shadows on PC, that single fact tells you most of what to expect: gorgeous water, raytraced global illumination, and a stutter pattern that has followed Anvil through three straight releases. Black Flag Resynced stuttering is not random bad luck. It comes from a handful of specific systems, and every one of them has a setting you can change.

The remake launches July 9, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Ubisoft Store, Epic, and Steam), with a day-one title update scheduled to deploy around July 3. I have spent the last two Ubisoft launches chasing frame-time spikes on Anvil, so this guide is built around the causes rather than a generic list of “close background apps and lower settings.” You will still lower a couple of settings, but you will know exactly why.

What is actually causing the stutter

There are three separate problems people lump together as “lag,” and Black Flag Resynced can hand you all three:

  • Shader compilation hitches. Fresh install or fresh GPU driver, the game rebuilds DirectX 12 shaders the first time it draws each new effect. That is the stutter you feel in the first hour, worst during the opening Havana and open-sea sections.
  • Traversal and streaming stutter. Sailing the Caribbean means the engine constantly loads new islands, ships, and water tiles off your SSD. When decompression or VRAM can’t keep up, the frame time spikes as you cross a zone boundary.
  • VRAM pressure. Anvil with raytraced global illumination is hungry. Once you exceed your card’s video memory, textures thrash between VRAM and system RAM, and you get the ugly repeating stutter that no CPU upgrade fixes.

Sort out which one you have before you touch anything. If the hitching fades after 30 to 60 minutes of play, it was shaders. If it happens at the same map transitions every time, it is streaming. If it gets steadily worse the longer you play and clears after a restart, it is VRAM.

The SSD requirement is not optional this time

The Steam store page insists the game be installed on an SSD, and the official minimum spec lists 65 GB on solid-state storage. That is not marketing. Anvil in Black Flag Resynced leans on DirectStorage to move assets straight from your NVMe drive to the GPU, cutting the CPU out of the decompression path.

Here is the catch that bit Shadows players: Ubisoft’s own DirectStorage build was older than Microsoft’s current release, and the mismatch produced I/O stutters when panning the camera or loading a new area even on fast drives. A community fix that dropped in Microsoft’s newer DirectStorage runtime removed most of those decompression hitches on rigs where VRAM was not the bottleneck. Expect the same situation here until Ubisoft ships an updated runtime.

What you can do today:

  • Install on your fastest drive. A Gen4 NVMe is ideal, a Gen3 NVMe is fine, a SATA SSD is the floor. A mechanical hard drive will stutter constantly no matter what else you tune. This is the one hardware rule with no workaround.
  • Leave 15 to 20 percent of the drive free. SSDs slow down badly when nearly full, and a cramped drive turns streaming stutter into a permanent condition.
  • Check that Resizable BAR is on. The minimum GPU spec literally says “REBAR ON.” Enable Resizable BAR (AMD) or Above 4G Decoding plus ReBAR in your motherboard BIOS. On modern cards it is often the difference between smooth streaming and stutter.

VRAM is the wall most people hit

The minimum GPU is a GTX 1660 with 6 GB, but 8 GB is the real comfort floor, and raytraced global illumination pushes past that fast at 1440p and above. When you run out of video memory, no other setting matters, because the engine is stalling to swap textures in and out.

The settings that move VRAM the most, in order of impact:

  1. Texture Streaming Pool / Texture Detail. This is the biggest lever. Drop it one notch below whatever your card’s VRAM suggests and the repeating stutter usually disappears. On an 8 GB card, aim for High rather than Ultra textures at 1440p.
  2. Raytraced Global Illumination. RTGI is on in every mode, but Anvil in Shadows let you scale it down to a lighter diffuse setting. Use the lowest RTGI option that still looks right to you before you sacrifice texture quality; RT is where the frame-time cost hides.
  3. Max Dynamic Resolution / render scale. Lowering the internal resolution cuts both VRAM and GPU load in one move, and with a good upscaler you barely see it.

Black Flag Resynced supports the latest upscaling and frame-generation technologies. Turn upscaling on (DLSS on GeForce, FSR on Radeon, XeSS on Arc) set to Quality first. It buys back a large chunk of performance for almost no visible cost, and it lowers VRAM pressure at the same time. Save frame generation for last; it smooths the number on screen but does nothing for the underlying streaming or shader hitches, and it adds a little input latency.

If you play Black Flag Resynced through Ubisoft Connect and also grind an online shooter or MMO on the side, the same congested home network that spikes your ping in those games is a separate problem from anything on this list. Kill the shader stutter before it ruins your first evening

Shader compilation is the most common single cause of stutter in 2026 games, and it is also the most fixable, because it goes away on its own once the shaders are cached. The trick is to speed that up and stop it from resetting.

  • Update your GPU driver before launch, then let shaders build. On GeForce, the NVIDIA App now has an Auto Shader Compilation feature that rebuilds DirectX 12 shaders while your machine is idle after a driver update. Turn it on. It shortens the “first hour stutter-fest” that a fresh install or driver swap normally causes, and it is part of the wider industry push against shader stutter this year.
  • Raise your shader cache size. Both NVIDIA and AMD let you set the shader cache to a larger value or unlimited in the control panel. A bigger cache means fewer evictions and fewer repeat hitches when you revisit an area.
  • Do not update your driver the night you plan to marathon. Every driver update invalidates the shader cache, so the game recompiles from scratch. On RTX 50 Blackwell, RX 9000 RDNA 4, and Arc Battlemage cards that means the whole shader-building stutter starts over. Update a day ahead and burn the shaders in with a slow walk around Havana.

If the day-one patch on July 3 ships a shader pre-compilation step, let it finish completely on first launch before you start playing. It looks like the game is hanging on a loading screen. It is doing you a favor.

The settings pass I would run first

If you want a starting point rather than a menu tour, this is the order I tune an Anvil-engine game on a mid-range PC:

  1. Confirm the game is on an SSD with headroom, and Resizable BAR is enabled in BIOS.
  2. Set upscaling to Quality (DLSS / FSR / XeSS to match your GPU).
  3. Textures to High on 8 GB cards, Ultra only on 12 GB and up.
  4. RTGI to the lowest option that still looks good.
  5. Everything else to High, then test.
  6. Only after the above is smooth, try frame generation if you want a higher number.

Monitor VRAM and frame time while you test, not just the FPS counter. A card sitting at 60 FPS with a frame-time graph full of spikes feels worse than a steady 50. Tools like the RTSS overlay or the built-in stats in the NVIDIA and AMD apps show you the spikes the average FPS hides.

The two culprits people forget: overlays and a full CPU thread

Two smaller causes account for a surprising share of the stutter reports on Anvil games, and both are quick to rule out.

The first is overlays. The Ubisoft Connect overlay, Discord, the Steam overlay, and various RGB or capture apps all inject themselves into the render loop, and any one of them can produce periodic hitches that look exactly like an engine problem. Turn off every overlay you do not actively need, launch the game, and see if the pattern changes. On Shadows this alone fixed the “regular half-second freeze every few minutes” complaint for a lot of people.

The second is a single saturated CPU thread. Open-world Anvil scenes, and the open-sea sailing in particular, lean hard on one or two cores for streaming and AI. If your CPU sits near the minimum spec (an i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600), you can be GPU-idle and still stutter because the game is waiting on a maxed-out core. Close Chrome tabs, browser-based music, and anything doing background sync while you play. It will not turn a six-core chip into a twelve-core one, but freeing a thread often smooths the exact traversal hitches that no graphics setting touches.

Neither of these needs a benchmark to test. Toggle the overlays off, close the background load, and play the same stretch of coastline twice. If the second run is smoother, you found your cause without changing a single in-game setting.

What the day-one patch will and won’t fix

Ubisoft has a title update lined up for around July 3, ahead of the July 9 release, and the pattern from Shadows is instructive. The launch patches fixed a lot of crashes and a few of the worst frame-pacing bugs, but the deeper Anvil issues (the DirectStorage version gap, RTGI’s VRAM appetite) took weeks and community mods to properly settle. Console players get a cleaner ride: PS5 runs a 60 FPS Performance mode, a 30 FPS Fidelity mode with extra raytraced reflections, and a 40 FPS Balanced mode on 120 Hz displays, with PS5 Pro adding Sony’s Spectral Super Resolution. Series S is capped at 30 FPS. PC gets the flexibility and the responsibility.

Do not wait for a patch to save a rig that is short on VRAM or stuck on a hard drive. Those are the two problems no update fixes, and they are the two most people actually have. Get the game onto fast storage, get upscaling on, keep textures inside your VRAM budget, and let the shaders build. That covers the large majority of Black Flag Resynced stuttering before you ever touch an advanced tweak.
